Westlake defeats Bears 44-24


In a battle of halves, Bastrop was dominant in the first half but Westlake won the second half with an impressive performance scoring 21 points in the third quarter. The Bears led 17-10 at halftime. The Bears opening drive of 64 yards ended with a 5-yard touchdown run by Monroe Jordan. Westlake answered with a 12 yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 7-7. The second Bastrop score followed a 76 yard pass from Jordan to Cory McDaniel to the Westlake 4-yard line. Jason Klaus then scored on a 1-yard run giving the Bears a 14-7 lead. Westlake countered in the second quarter with a 38-yd field goal. A penalty stopped a 64 yard Bear drive, and Kevin Klaus ended the second period scoring with a 35-yd field goal. The Bears first half produced 229 yards of offense. Things changed in the second half. Westlake opened the half with a 70-yd drive ending with a 24 yard touchdown pass from Nick Foles to Stanton Jobe. This tied the score at 17-17. On the following kickoff, a determined runback by Hector LaBoy resulted in a 100–yd touchdown for the Bears. The Bears again led 24-17, but they would not score again. Westlake took control of the game scoring two more touchdowns in the quarter to go ahead 31-24. The first came on a 48 yard run by Max Minor and the second on a 55 yard run by Travis Breihan. The Chaps ended with 252 yards in the third quarter to end the Bears upset bid. The Chaps scored 13 more points in the 4th quarter for the final score of 44-24. The Bears mounted two more drives in the half but failed to score. Westlake led in first downs 21-15, rushing 338-177, and passing 185-132. Ryan Lincoln was the Bears leading rusher with 91 yards.
