Bastrop Bears Defeat New Braunfels Canyon 26-23


The Bastrop Bears defeated previously unbeaten New Braunfels Canyon 26-23 on a rain soaked Erhard Field in Bastrop. Canyon scored the only points in the first quarter on a 25 yard field goal. The second period belonged to Bastrop when they outscored the Cougars 19-6 giving them a 19-9 lead at halftime. Ricky Lincoln scored the first Bear touchdown on a 9 yard run. Jacob Johnson passed to Dominque Moore for 23 yards for the Bear’s second score. After a missed kick the score was 13-3. On a 75 yard scoring drive, the Cougars brought the score to 13-9. Then on a 10 yard scoring pass from Johnson to Moore the Bears increased their lead at halftime to 19-9. Late in the second quarter, Bastrop lost quarterback Johnson for the rest of the game after being ejected for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Star receiver, Dominque Moore took over as quarterback in the second half. While the Bears were adjusting to their new quarterback, the Cougars scored the only touchdown in the 3rd quarter, bringing the score to 19-16. With Johnson out, the Bears went to their running game in the 4th quarter. Bastrop’s leading rusher, Rashon Ward, scored on a 2 yard run. The drive went for 70 yards bringing the score to 26-16. But Canyon was not finished-scoring with little over 2 minutes to play on a blocked punt return of 38 yards. The Bears ran out the clock after a missed onside kick, leaving the final score 26-23. Bastrop led in 1st downs 19-7 and total yards 340-159. Leading rushers for Bastrop were Rashon Ward with 173 yards and Ricky Lincoln with 51 yards. Bastrop’s final district game will be November 1st at Lake Travis. The Bears are now 7-2 and 4-1 in district.
